5 Tips for Keeping Baby Cool (Yes, Cool) During These Winter Months

5 Tips for Keeping Baby Cool (Yes, Cool) During These Winter Months

Keeping baby cool during the winter? This might seem odd, but it is actually a safer care tactic for your little one. A parent’s natural reaction is typically to bundle baby up and crank up the heat. However, if your child is too warm, this can pose severe health risks. Grow by Web MD explains:

“Lots of parents think that they need to keep their baby bundled and extra warm, but this isn’t really true...In fact, the risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) goes up if your baby becomes too hot...Overheating is linked to SIDS, so it’s important that you don’t bundle your baby too tightly in the winter.”

We’ve put together a list of five helpful tips for keeping your baby cool (not cold!) during the winter season.

1. Don’t Drape a Blanket Over Your Baby’s Stroller

Although it’s very important to keep the wind off your baby, doctors do not recommend draping a blanket over the stroller as a shield. Most strollers are already equipped with the proper cover for optimal airflow and protection. If it is too chilly outside, opt for a hat, mittens, and booties instead. Goumikids has mittens with convenient straps to keep them secure. They even have adorable matching booties and beanies for a complete infant ensemble! You can also tuck a small blanket around your baby (to chest level) and walk against the wind to decrease the amount of exposure to cold air.

2. Stick with the Swaddle

Fight the urge to cover your baby with a heavy, fuzzy blanket. During the winter, it might seem like a good idea to keep them “extra warm and cozy,” but you don’t want to risk overheating your little one. Swaddling is a great alternative, especially for younger babies. Aside from the safety benefit of lowering the risk of SIDS, swaddling offers other benefits like helping soothe a fussy baby and promoting longer, sounder sleep. Need a new swaddle? 3. Use a Waterproof Mattress Sheet

Cover your little one’s mattress with a well-fitted waterproof mattress protector sheet. This simultaneously helps control excess sweating during sleep time and promotes breathability to assure enough air circulates through baby’s crib. Naturepedic is an affordable brand that offers organic, waterproof protection free from harmful chemicals.

4. Nix the Winter Coat in the Car

Doctors suggest taking baby’s winter coat off when riding in a car seat due to safety concerns. Since you would need to loosen the straps to accommodate the extra material, there’s an increased chance of injury or death if an accident occurs. But we know you want to make sure your baby isn’t uncomfortably cold, mama. Instead, try dressing your son or daughter in breathable layers and warming up the car 5-10 minutes ahead of the drive.

5. Set Room Temperature Between 68 and 72°F

According to Web MD, selecting the right temperature for your baby is a vital factor in decreasing the risk of SIDS. Experts recommend keeping your baby’s room (or your bedroom if they’re still sleeping in the same room) between 68 and 72°F. This ensures the room is not too hot or too cold, but just right!

Applying these five practical tips this winter will help your baby stay comfortable and safe during the remaining winter months.
