One Mom's Story: Megan and Baby Melanie

One Mom's Story: Megan and Baby Melanie

Today's mom, Megan, married her high school sweetheart, Josh. They've been together since 1999, and thought they were prepared for anything. In December of 2010, they gave birth to their first child, Melanie. Melanie made them realize there was no way you could be prepared for something like colic. When Melanie was two weeks old, she started to have her crying spells. Starting at 6:00 PM and lasting until about midnight, Josh and Megan were at their wits end and were trying everything.  Megan says, "My husband and I tried multiple ways to get her to stop crying: Car rides (she hates the car), swaddling, rocking, walking with her, bouncer, swing, car seat on dryer, pacifier (she hates it and spits it out), CD's with obnoxious noises (hair dryer, heartbeats. . . supposed to simulate to womb. . .)." They also tried Harvey Karp's 5 S's; Megan states, "Before we had Melanie we went to a program called "Happiest Baby on the Block" it teaches you that babies have a crying reflex and that you can turn the crying off doing certain things like swaddling, shushing, sucking, swaying.  Well Melanie obviously didn't have this "reflex" because we tried it and she wouldn't stop crying." However, they did find out that they could

swaddle her, put her on her side and walk around the room while gently shaking her and making shushing noises--this seemed to have a soothing effect, but any parent knows you can't do this for six hours straight! Megan took Melanie to her pediatrician and he did agree that Melanie had colic, and told her that, ". . . there was really nothing I could do besides wait for her to grow out of it." So, Megan took matters in her hands and started doing some internet research on colic relief. "Gripe water was a common result that came up.  Unfortunately there are many different gripe waters available, and I started with the wrong one.  She hated this particular brand, and it did nothing for her.  So I figured all gripe water were created equal (I was obviously wrong). I heard about Colic Calm through a search that I did as ask.com. I typed in colic and relief in the search engine." And that's when Megan found the answer to Melanie's crying. Melanie was five weeks old when they started using Colic Calm. Megan says, "We would administer Colic Calm when she would start to get fussy and it wasn't because she was hungry, wet, tired, or wanted attention.  She would start to cry and we couldn't stop it, so we gave Colic Calm.  Usually within five minutes she would settle down.  Very rarely she would need a second dose within a half hour, but when she did that would usually work within five minutes." Megan finishes her interview with, "We would have our iPods in to drown out the sound of her cry.  This was very tiring and frustrating for both of us.  I started to dread dinner time because that would mean she was going to be starting to cry soon.  We were stuck in our house because we couldn't go anywhere with her because we couldn't stop her crying.  That is until we found Colic Calm--we can now go out and enjoy a night with our family.  Thank you so very much."
