One Mom's Story: Kathleen and Baby Zane

One Mom's Story: Kathleen and Baby Zane

This week's story comes to us from Pennsylvania, where second time mom, Kathleen, had to deal with her newborn son's tummy issues while her husband was away at a work training seminar for two weeks. Zane would cry so much, she couldn't tell if he had colic or gas pains, but after a consultation with her pediatrician, Zane was diagnosed with infant reflux. The pediatrician prescribed Zantac, but Zane wouldn't take it--as Kathleen says, "He either spit it straight back out or brought it back up within a few minutes. After I tasted it, I didn't blame him. The stuff is horrible! After five days I gave up on the Zantac and used only the Colic Calm." Kathleen survived to tell the tale. . .

From Kathleen: Zane was a happy wonderful baby at first. He would fuss for a few moments when he wanted something & then he'd stop and wait for one of us to change him or me to feed him. He was quiet & peaceful & a delightful change of pace from our first, who was known in the nursery as the screamer with the button nose! (She developed severe colic & I cut out all dairy, eggs, & nuts until she was seven months old.) When Zane was a week old, we began to notice a change in him. He would fuss after eating, making us wonder if he was still hungry. He would try to eat more & scream. [Then] Try to eat more & scream. We began to suspect he was having tummy issues & couldn't decipher if he was hungry or hurting. Thus he would overeat & then spit up. Then he'd scream some more & try to eat more. I began monitoring how long he nursed and would "cut him off" when these sessions started. That didn't do any good as far as his screams went! That's when I started taking all the dairy out of my diet as I had with our first child. I noticed a little bit of a difference with that. I also cut out all acidic foods like tomato products and gassy foods like broccoli and cabbage. That made a big difference! But still he had problems. Daddy was the only one who could soothe his hurts. When Zane was two weeks old, my husband (J.D.) had to travel to Wisconsin for a two week Kohler training class for his job as a generator technician. I was home alone after my second c-section with our four year old daughter, Zora, & Zane. (Our first child, Zora, was breech and Zane had his umbilical cord tied in 2 large knots & those two knots in a knot. Both were born on the same day!) My family lives more than 20 miles away and tried to visit as often as they could during the first week J.D. was gone, but I was still alone with the kids every morning, evening and night. I was battling postpartum depression & having a tough time of it. Zane & I cried a lot of tears during those two weeks! I was researching online 3 days after my husband left & found a link to the Colic Calm website. Intrigued, I began to read more about the product and what others had to say. I quickly decided it was worth a try & placed my order. [When I received it], I began by only giving Zane a couple of drops--literally. When that didn't work, I began gradually increasing the dosage and over the next few days until I had him at 1/4 teaspoon. That was when I began to notice results. He was crying & screaming and almost inconsolable one morning the week after J.D. got home. I gave him the Colic Calm & turned on some music. Then I danced around with him in my arms, doing the dip, bob, weave, spin dance I learned when my oldest was colicky. Within moments, he settled on my shoulder, quiet & calm. My happy little man was back! Shortly thereafter, he dozed off & I put him to bed. I was thrilled! For the next several weeks, Zane would get Colic Calm after he ate and whenever he was having a problem with the reflux. As the weeks went by and Zane showed improvement, we gradually increased the dosage we gave him for those times when he was screaming and reduced the number of times we used the Colic Calm as a preventative medicine. By the time Zane went to his 3 month pediatric appointment, he no longer needed Colic Calm after every feeding. Now Zane is almost five months old and is doing great. He still has some "indigestion" as we call it and when it happens, we give him anywhere between 2.0 mL to 2.5 mL (or 1/2 teaspoon), depending on the severity of his discomfort. There have been times when he needed another dose thirty minutes later, but those, thankfully, have been rare. Are you a Colic Calm user and would like to share your story?
