One Mom's Story: Shannon and David

One Mom's Story: Shannon and David

This week's One Mom's Story comes from Shannon, and though her son, David, is almost two, she looks back and relives the nightmare that is colic and GERD. . . When David was a baby, he was suffering from both colic and GERD--not fun. His pediatrician put him on both Zantac and Prevacid, but neither seemed to help David. Shannon and her husband hated the thought of their seven week old child being put on such harsh medications--especially when they didn't seem to work. Both were trying to deal with the symptoms, looking ahead to "the light at the end of the tunnel." But then came THE NIGHT. As Shannon describes it. . . "There was one night that was the pivotal moment for us

. . . David had suffered such horrible GERD that not only was breastfeeding impossible for him but he was even having trouble on formula and had a hard time keeping weight on. He was in newborn size clothing until 3 months old and was by no means tiny when he was born (he weighed in at a healthy 7lbs 15 ounces). We went through countless outfits, bibs, and crib sheets a day. The straw that broke the camels back was when he began to suffer from colic in addition. The night I was referring to was the worst night I have had in motherhood to this point. He was only 7 weeks old and we were all tired from the normal adjustment to life with an infant. We were lucky that he was a fairly good sleeper, for an infant, from the start. However, this particular night he was inconsolable. None of the normal go-to's worked. I tried the swing, rocking, singing, ready, swaying, bouncing, music, you name it. He cried for six hours in a row. SIX HOURS. No break, no sleep. Just screaming. At one point, I joined in on the crying. This was just not going to work for anyone. He was miserable and there was nothing I could do to help." Shannon's dad, seeing the pain that the family was in, decided to do some research on his own. He came across the Colic Calm site and sent it over for Shannon to look at. She says, "I spent my (limited) free time reading other parents' reactions. Most of them were going through identical situations to ours. So David's Papa, and namesake, ordered a bottle for us to try right there on the spot." David had his first dose of Colic Calm at seven weeks old and Shannon continued to use it as he suffered from GERD. David was taken off both Zantac and Prevacid and luckily, never suffered another night like the one described above. Shannon administered it to David on a as needed basis during the day and before going to bed at night. And how is he today? Shannon says, "David is just one month shy of turning two. We still have a bottle of Colic Calm on hand and, thank our lucky stars, have not needed it in quite some time."
