Rub-a-Dub-Dub, Keep Baby Safe in the Tub

Rub-a-Dub-Dub, Keep Baby Safe in the Tub

Rub-a-dub-dub, a baby in a tub. And safe that baby will be!

With roughly 58 children drowning in bathtubs each year, practicing bath safety at home is a lifesaving practice. Keep your child safe and sound with these five bath safety tips:

1. All Eyes on Baby

First, and arguably most importantly, never leave your baby alone in the bathtub. Children can drown in only a few inches of water in a matter of seconds. This is also vital when baby gets old enough to be mobile in the bath. Their curious minds may gravitate towards exploring the water handle, trying to climb out of the bath, or other potentially dangerous actions.

Bottom line: All eyes on baby at all times! Overly prepare ahead of time. Get a towel, lotion, diaper, and pajamas out for baby. And for you mom, make sure you use the restroom and take care of any other personal matters before bath time begins.

2. Pop a Squat

Teach your baby to sit in the bath from a young age. Stress the importance of staying on your bottom, so they don’t fall. It helps if you “pop a squat” in the bath with them initially. Your baby is more likely to stay calm and seated if you are. Monkey see, monkey do!

Pro Tip: Since your baby is safely seated in the bathtub, this is the perfect time to administer Colic Calm. In addition to your little one being still, this helps prevent the darkness of Colic Calm staining your baby’s clothes. Simply administer according to the instructions and rinse any excess liquid of your baby’s body. He/she will stay clean, while their tummy is staying calm.

3. Cool It Down

Regulate your baby’s bath temperature so it’s not too hot. If it’s too hot for you, it’s obviously too hot for baby. However, what adults consider a comfortable level of warmth is typically still too hot for infants. To be on the safe side, cool it down. Room temperature, or even slightly below, is a safe go-to. You can also try this baby bath thermometer to monitor the water temperature more accurately.

4. Slip-Free Zone

Invest in a sturdy and comfortable bathmat once your infant graduates from the baby tub. This will help keep your little one upright when they’re sitting and prevent slippery falls if they’re ever tempted to stand. We highly recommend the SKIP HOP Moby 4-piece bath time essentials kit. It comes with an adorable soft bathmat, whale faucet cover, and an elbow and knee rest for mama.

5. Clear the Way

Clear the way for baby! Before bath time begins, make sure all electronics, sharp objects and heavy objects are away from the bathing area. While your little one is exploring, they may excitedly grab and knock items over. Assure that there isn’t anything harmful in arm’s reach.

Splish splash, now it’s time to take a bath! Enjoy a fun (and safe) bath time with your baby by always putting these five bath safety tips into practice.
